Counselor-In-Training Certification Program

Our Counselor-in-Training Certification Program is a training program for boys and girls entering grade 8 in the fall, until they reach the age of 15. The program includes regular training sessions with various experts in the field, First Aid certification, and hands-on counselor experience with different groups and activities during camp.

This program is for teens that are enthusiastic about working with children and enjoy being outside. Those interested must submit an application and be prepared to provide references.

The fee for the 2020 program is $360 per CIT.

About The Program

Participants must be 13 or 14 years of age  (12 year olds entering 8th grade in Fall 2020 will also be considered). There is a program fee of $360 for those accepted into the program.

First-Aid Certification (or similar program) will be provided to those who do not yet have a valid training certificate.

There are two types of "CIT":

  • First Year CIT: a CIT who is in their very first year as a CIT at our camp.

  • Certified CIT: a CIT who completed the CIT Program with us last year and received a certificate, but is not yet a paid counselor (not yet 15 years of age as of 7/31/2020).

All applicants must complete the CIT Program application, including providing three references and a short written component (see "Application" below for more information).  This process is important to our training program because it provides the opportunity for applicants to experience what future job applications will entail.

Those that successfully completed the CIT Certification Program last summer will automatically be accepted into the program again this year after they have submitted their complete application.

First Year CIT

First Year CITs will be broken into two groups- Group A and Group B. Each group will spend half of their day training/participating in activities with a group of their peers and the other half working as a counselor in a group/activity to gain hands-on experience. Half of the summer will be spent in a camp group and the other half will be spent in an activity to give CITs a full range of experience and training in every aspect of camp.

See sample schedule here.

Certified CIT

Certified CITs will work with one single group throughout the day for the entire 5-week session. CIT preference, skills, training, and past performance are taken into consideration when creating placement schedules.

Application for All CITs

On their online application (link below) candidates will need to provide the contact information (not a letter) of 3 work or personal references (work, community service, school, sports, etc) and a written response:

In 300-500 words, write a response that answers all of the following questions:

  1. Why do you want to be a part of the CIT Certification Program at North Salem Day Camp? (If you’ve been with us before- Thanks for coming back! What is the most important reason you've came back to our program?)

  2. Why do you think you would make an excellent counselor in the future?

  3. What are you most looking forward to about the CIT Certification Program and North Salem Day Camp?

Please note: Acceptance into the CIT Certification Program is not guaranteed. Spaces are limited. Your application will be reviewed by administration and acceptance is based on many factors- including, but not limited to: residency, attendance/availability during 2020 camp hours, and previous participation in the CIT Program or as a camper at North Salem Day Camp. Applications will be accepted until March 2nd. After this date, applications will be reviewed and you will be contacted via email regarding your status in the program. Please look out for this email in the first two weeks of March. Those applicants not accepted into the program will have the option to be put on a waitlist.
